Working with ISTE Standards

ISTE Standards are in place to ensure that all learning is student driven. It encourages teachers to make sure that learning is centered around student learning and that teaching is driven by the students needs in order for students to be successful. I personally like the standards because they help students take responsibility for their learning. I feel like they also help students keep track of their learning as well as give them an idea of what they should expect and look out for. These standards include skills that the students can use even after they are finished their schooling. These skills can help the students in the real world which is very important.

The standard that I was drawn to the most was the “Creative Communicator” Standard. I am an assistant teacher in a preschool class, so I definitely love creativity and encouraging creativity.

Three learning activities that I would assign (if I was to teach students who are a bit older) would include:

  1. An activity based around our clothing unit would be for the students to come up with their own design for a clothing piece of their choice. The student could come up with any design that they can think of that is 100% their own idea. The clothing piece can be a shirt, a pair of pants, or even a sneaker or shoe design that they can come up with.
  2. Another activity could be for the students to write a short story about their family, they can talk about a memory that they may member about their family, or they can even talk about what each member of their family looks like, their names, and their relationship with them.
  3. The last activity that I would assign would be for the students to create a family tree to represent all of their family members and the connection that they have to them.
